Sleep apnea (OSAS), which is frequently encountered, is a risk factor that negatively affects the general health status of the person. This disorder, also known as sleep apnea, causes the person to experience a chocking condition for a few seconds. Meanwhile, the oxygen level drops and the brain feels the need to wake the patient.
Some patients do not remember that they have sleep apnea during the day. It is also possible to encounter frequent interrupted sleep and consecutive episodes of sleep apnea. This disorder, which negatively affects the quality of life of the person, causes tired and sluggish awakening and difficulty in performing daily routines.
Central sleep apnea is respiratory arrest caused by the brain not giving the command to breathe. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs due to complaints such as enlargement of tonsils, weight and sagging of the soft palate.
OSAS is more common in people with snoring problems, who are overweight, who have any obstruction of the upper respiratory tract, who have high blood pressure. All respiratory diseases affecting the narrowing of the airways may be the cause of sleep apnea.
The aim of the treatment planning determined according to the patient’s respiratory tract, apnea depth and type of apnea, is the effective solution of the related problem. The success rate of surgeries performed in the field of snoring and sleep apnea surgery is high. The CPAP (air machine) method, which is frequently used by physicians today, is one of the treatment options.
In the CPAP method, the respiratory tract channels are opened by attaching the mask connected to the device to the patient and transmitting compressed air to the patient. The patient uses the device during the night and thus does not encounter the problem of stopping breathing. Their sleep becomes more efficient.
In the treatment of sleep apnea, patients should also pay attention to their personal lifestyles. Since being overweight is one of the main causes of respiratory arrest during sleep, an appropriate eating program is prepared for the patients. Alternative solutions such as doing sports, not consuming cigarettes and alcohol, and sleeping on the side also make it possible to breath comfortably. For this reason, there are responsibilities for the patient as well as the applications for the treatment of sleep apnea.
